Another cheap ESO gold note for the year was old titles being rehashed at less than bargain offerings, with Grand Theft Auto V, The Last of Us Remastered, Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition, the Halo: Master Chief Collection and Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag to name a few. It's guaranteed to continue in the new year, with Tim Schafer announcing at the PlayStation Experience event earlier this month that a remastered editions of Grim Fandango and Day of the Tentacle for the PS4 and PC in the coming years.
DOTA 2 regained the number two spot from World of Warcraft, helped by a 24.52% playtime boost in June compared to May. Increased Summer Sale related Steam activity was likely a factor, and on the content side the game added ranked team matchmaking. World of Warcraft, on the other hand, saw an 8.76% playtime decrease in June, due in part to WildStar stealing some players.
It's been a good year for shooter fans, starting from the competent mecha action of Titanfall on Xbox One to the comforting satisfaction of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. The fact that Battlefield 4 is now finally trouble free after a year of patching should not be overlooked, nor should the quiet excellence of Insurgency, a hardcore shooter suited perfectly to fans of Call of Duty and Counter Strike that have felt left out in recent years.
A week later, two great new action titles will turn up on the same day. Crysis 3, the extremely fun and ridiculously pretty first person shooter, will arrive on retail shelves alongside Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. The latter is not a traditional stealthy Metal Gear game, but is instead an over the top action splatterfest, featuring the most gruesome swordplay outside of a Ninja Gaiden title.
It be an interesting next couple of years, that for sure. As MMOs go, the only potentially serious challenger to WoW has been Guild Wars 2, released last year to critical accolades (among them, my own) thatWoW hasn enjoyed in ages. No one save publisher NCSoft knows how many subscribers Guild Wars 2 has, but the free to play game sold well over three million copies since launching last August. This year we see The Elder Scrolls Online, which has the potential to be huge, based on all the interest in Bethesda mega popular fantasy roleplaying series and that it been helmed by Matt Firor, one of the founding designers of Dark Age of Camelot (a critical darling itself and reasonably successful during the pre WoW era). The only thing working against The Elder Scrolls Online is the potential exhaustion of the high (as in lots of magic), generally medieval fantasy setting does the world want another Tolkien inspired MMO? We find out later this year.
